How You Can Help

As I embark on this long walk north, I invite you to join me! There are a number of ways that you can offer your support on this trip. Here are the "Big Two":

  • Participate! Keep it simple and become a follower of this blog as I do my best to share my experience along the way. Pray for safety, wisdom, health, and for the many days that I will be apart from Tera. Or, for those of you who would like to get a little more involved, write me a note, send a package, or arrange for a warm bed, meal, and shower. Better yet, join me on the trail! Whether it's for a day or more, I'd welcome your company. The only thing I ask is that you come self-sufficient. Aside from a having a first aid kit and swapping stories, there won't be much I can spare to share!
  • The second way you can offer support is financially. This entire trip was made possible by a "nest egg" left by my grandparents. As a way to multiply and not bury talents, my goal is to equal or exceed that gift of $5,000 through donations to the Educational Concerns for Hunger Organization (ECHO). Why ECHO? My grandfather volunteered with ECHO while he was still alive, and since this trip was made possible by his legacy, I find it fitting to give back to an organization that he cared about.

If supporting this journey financially is something that you would consider, you can send donations directly to ECHO. You can either send a check, or donate online with the ability to select whether you want to transfer monies directly from your checking/savings account (similar to writing a check) or pay using a credit/debit card. If you do choose to donate, it's important that you earmark that donation as part of this Appalachian Trail experience. This will allow me to receive updates on the total amount of donations, and I will attempt to update the total monthly. Here's how to do that:
  • Mailing a check: Make the check payable to ECHO. Write "Dent - Appalachian Trail" in the memo line.
  • Donating online: Go to the ECHO website and then navigate to Give >> Give Online. Under "General Donation" enter the amount you wish to contribute. In the description box immediately to the right, type "Dent - Appalachian Trail" which will allow the donation to be indexed accordingly in ECHO's database. On the next page, you will see instructions for paying via checking/savings account or credit/debit card.
If you have any difficulties or questions, you can try getting a hold of Tera or me. Otherwise, you could call ECHO directly. I've been communicating with Tonya Schrott, Director of Development, regarding this process; she should be able to answer any of your questions.
